Experts all agree that we should get seven to eight hours of sleep each night. But let's face it - sleepless nights happen.
Here are some tips from the experts on how you can still power through your day.
1.) Ignore the urge to hit the snooze button on your alarm. Don't do it! Those extra seven minutes dozed off aren't doing anything for you – as far as restorative sleep goes. Just set your alarm for as late as possible.
2.) Eat breakfast. Research suggests that eating within an hour of waking up can boost your mood and cognitive performance. Just make sure you grab stuff with whole grains, protein and fruit – no junk. You don't want to crash from a sugary meal.
3.) Indulge in a little caffeine – not a lot. Experts recommend no more than 400 milligrams per day – which is about four cups of regular coffee.
4.) Get outside. The bright, natural light can help you feel more alert. Avoid sunglasses for at least an hour – to help your brain get going. Bonus points if you can sneak in some outdoor exercise.
5.) Get your toughest tasks done early. Do your creative stuff first – and leave any busy work for later. You're only going to be alert in the first part of your day.
6.) And if possible – take a nap in the afternoon.
