SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - For the second year in a row, Middle East politics has clouded the selection of a student representative to the University of California's governing board.
The UC Board of Regents voted Wednesday to confirm UCLA junior Avi Oved as its new student regent-designate, a position that puts him in line to be the board's voting student member next year. Oved is a Jewish student whose nomination has been debated since student newspapers reported he received campaign funding while running for a student government seat last year from a private pro-Israel foundation.
The statewide UC Student Association had asked the board to postpone the vote while it investigated whether the funds posed a conflict of interest.
Last year, some Jewish groups opposed the selection of a Muslim student who had advocated for a Palestinian state while at UC Berkeley.
