Fresno County fines pot grower $99,000

Posted: Updated:

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Fresno County has imposed its largest fine yet as it continues strict enforcement of its ordinance banning marijuana cultivation.

Supervisors voted Tuesday to levy a $99,000 penalty against a man caught growing 99 plants on his property near Laton earlier this year.

Xiongh Thao had appealed the law, claiming sheriff's detectives improperly cited him. The Fresno Bee reports ( supervisors voted 5-0 to deny the appeal.

Also Tuesday, a Squaw Valley woman was fined $1,300 for renting her property to a tenant who grew pot without her knowledge.

The county has prohibited marijuana cultivation since February. The fine is $1,000 per plant plus 10 percent interest per month for unpaid fines.

Officials have cited public safety concerns for the ban. Supervisors say marijuana farming operations have been linked to violent crime.
