Deputy charged with firing in air during kid chase

Posted: Updated:

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County prosecutors say a man has been charged with firing a gun into the air when he was an off-duty sheriff's deputy after kids rang his doorbell and ran away.

Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Gootman says 48-year-old Sung Jin Pak was charged Tuesday with one count of discharge of a firearm with gross negligence.

Prosecutors say the now-retired Pak was a sheriff's deputy in October when a group of children repeatedly rang the doorbell at his home in Stevenson Ranch then ran.

They say he chased after them and fired his gun into the air.

If convicted of the misdemeanor charge Pak faces a maximum of a year in jail.

He's scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday. Messages left seeking comment at a possible home number weren't immediately returned.
