FONTANA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty Los Angeles police officer shot and killed a dog that had chewed off the ears of a 4-year-old boy at a home in Fontana.
A police statement says the boy's mother screamed for help after the family's 6-year-old pit bull attacked the child on Monday.
Two off-duty Los Angeles police officers heard the mother's scream and ran to her home. The statement says they found the dog "actively biting the child in the head and face."
One of the officers shot the pit bull.
The boy, who suffered severed ears and puncture wounds to his head, was treated at a hospital.
Fontana police are continuing to investigate the incident.
