- Former Administrative Patent Judge Richard Torczon Joins the Firm -
PALO ALTO, Calif., June 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, the premier provider of legal services to technology, life sciences, and growth enterprises worldwide, is pleased to announce that Richard Torczon has become Of Counsel to the firm. Torczon joins WSGR from the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), where he has been an Administrative Patent Judge since 1996. He will be based in the firm's Washington, D.C., office.
"Increasingly, as a complement or alternative to litigation, our clients facing patent challenges prefer to go before the PTAB for post-grant and inter partes reviews," said Doug Clark, co-managing partner at the firm. "Richard's long and distinguished career at the PTAB gives him exceptional insight into this process and makes him a tremendous asset to our patent office litigation practice. In addition, he will work closely with our IP counseling and patents team to offer expert advice to clients on a wide variety of other patent matters. Richard is a great fit for the firm, and we are very pleased to welcome him."
During his tenure as an Administrative Patent Judge, Torczon wrote more than a thousand opinions and orders on patent appeals, petitions, motions, and briefs. He was an early member of the interference trial section and authored many of the PTAB's trial rules. Before serving as judge, Torczon was an associate solicitor in the U.S. Patent and Trade Office's (USPTO's) Office of the Solicitor, where he represented the USPTO on patent and trademark matters, particularly before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. In addition, he worked as an Honors Attorney at the Department of Commerce and, prior to that, at the Adachi International Patent Law firm in Nagoya, Japan, where he assisted with prosecution matters. Torczon earned his J.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as an M.S. in biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. in computer science from Rice University.
