Four People Killed in Crash Near Mendota

UPDATE: The driver of the Mercedes SUV involved in this accident has been arrested. Rien Ban, 43, was booked into Fresno County Jail on felony DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter and homicide.

 


 

Four people are now dead and two others are in a hospital fighting to stay alive, after a crash near Mendota Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened just before 4:30 p.m. on Highway 180 and Sonoma.

Officers believe the driver of a blue Mercedes SUV had been drinking.

They say he was speeding eastbound on Highway 180, passing cars at a high rate of speed, when he stayed in the westbound lanes even after passing another vehicle.

At the same time, a black Kia was headed westbound.

Witnesses told officers the driver of the Kia swerved to the left to avoid the SUV.

But, at the same time, the driver of the SUV returned to the eastbound lanes anbroad sideded the car.

Three people in the Kia were killed at the scene.

A passenger in the Mercedes was also killed.

The two drivers were flown to a hospital in Fresno.
