Pilot Makes Emergency Landing Near Highway 41

Posted:
MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

A pilot walked away from his small plane, after he made an emergency landing along Highway 41 in Madera County Sunday afternoon.

Madera County Sheriff John Anderson says the man was headed to Reno, from Carlsbad.

He told deputies he suddenly smelled fuel and realized he was losing fuel.

So, he turned and tried to land on a dirt path in an orchard.

He skidded and crashed through a barbed wire fence, landing just inches from the roadway.

While the pilot was not hurt, the accident tied up traffic along the highway for about two hours.

The damaged plane was eventually loaded onto a tow truck.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating this incident.
