Emergency Beacon Helps Rescue Injured Kayaker

Posted:
MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

A kayaker is lucky to be alive after he had to be rescued from a remote part of the mountains in Madera County. The man was a part of a five person kayak team that was on the San Joaquin River near Balloon Dome.

The 34 year–old man from Sacramento hurt both his legs while kayaking. Members of his kayaking crew were able to signal for help using an emergency beacon.

The California Highway Patrol H–40 Air Operations Crew made their way to the remote area and hoisted the kayaker into their helicopter.

The Madera County Sheriff says the kayakers had a "Spot Alarm". The way a "Spot Alarm" works is you hit the 'SOS' button, and it sends signal to a satellite, and the information is beamed to law enforcement, in this case the CHP.

The rescue crew said the signal was spot on and they didn't have to search for the kayaker, because the emergency beacon took them to the exact location.

The injured kayaker was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.
