A Great Place for Pennsylvania Veterans to Call Home

HARRISBURG, Pa., June 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania's six veteran's homes, operated by the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, will celebrate the 23rd annual State Veterans Homes Week, June 8-14.

"State Veterans Homes Week is the perfect opportunity for members of the community to visit the homes, meet some of America's honored veterans and explore various volunteer programs," said Brig. Gen. Jerry Beck, the state's deputy adjutant general for veterans affairs. "It's also a time for us to showcase the homes as a place for veterans to reside when the time comes that they need personal care, skilled nursing care, or dementia care."

Special activities throughout the week will include musical entertainment, games and tournaments, field trips to local attractions, Flag Day ceremonies, carnivals and picnics. The admissions staff at each home will also be available to answer questions and give tours.

"Our staff is fully licensed, carefully trained and dedicated to treating residents with the dignity and respect they deserve. No applicant is denied admission to a state veterans home because of lack of income or assets," Beck added. "We encourage veterans or their families to contact us to explore how we can help them meet their long-term care needs."

The six homes serve more than 1,600 eligible veterans and their spouses. They include the Delaware Valley Veterans Home in Philadelphia, the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center in Scranton, the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home in Hollidaysburg, the Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors Home in Erie, the Southeastern Veterans Center in Spring City, and the Southwestern Veterans Center in Pittsburgh.
