Heroin Addiction On The Rise

Posted:

Heroin use among young people is on the rise. According to the Ohio State Health Department, heroin addiction appears to be at an all-time high.

According to addiction specialist Dr. Steven Matson, many young heroin users start with opiate pain killers like Vicodin and Percocet… whether prescribed, stolen or bought on the streets.

But pain pills are expensive, pushing teens to seek out a cheaper alternative with a similar high. "So they move to the heroin which is still pretty cheap, about $10 a dose compared to like $50–$60 for a prescription drug," said Dr. Matson.

He says genetics and environment are two major risk factors when it comes to teens and heroin addiction, but the drug has no boundaries and does not discriminate.
