Fresno State's Class of 2014 Totals 56-Hundred Students

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) - Family and friends packed the Save Mart Center Saturday to witness a milestone in education for more than 5600 graduates.  Fresno State President Dr. Joseph Castro told the Class of 2014 that it's a great day to be a Bulldog. This is the first graduating class for Dr. Castro since taking the reins at Fresno State ten months ago.

This year's President's medal winner was German Marquez Alcala.  "It's truly humbling and truly honoring.  I wasn't expecting it to be honest." Alcala is off to Purdue to pursue his doctorate in ag business.

Kevin Tatum is one of more than 4-thousand graduates who earned a bachelor's degree.  "It feels good because it's been a long process.  I took longer than I thought.  I originally wanted to be a teacher but switched over to nursing."  Tatum now works in the burn unit at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.  It was a proud moment for parents who waited more than 20 years to see their sons and daughters finish college.

Fresno State also awarded a posthumous honorary doctorate degree to Pete Mehas, a Fresno State Alumnus and a lifelong educator.
