Elder Paws Saves Senior Dogs Facing Euthanasia

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

A Fresno dog rescue group is trying to make a difference for older dogs who are only 48 hours away from being put to sleep.  Elder Paws is the brainchild of Cathie Garnier.  She watched her elderly dog die in her arms and she worried that senior dogs in pounds had no chance of being adopted and would die alone.

Valdena is one of her success stories.  Her kennel card read "ancient and snappy" which she said was a certain death sentence for her.  Garnier placed Valdena in a foster home until she was adopted.

Garnier rescues senior dogs from shelters in Merced, Madera, Chowchilla, Reedley and Selma.  The group spends 500 to 600 dollars per dog getting them back in good health and ready for a new home.

When it comes to adoptions Garnier says, "You just have to have a lot of love and a spot on your couch or bed and we take care of everything else."

Elder Paws provides, food, leashes, collars, beds and vet care for foster pet parents until the animals are adopted.  The adoption fee is $100.

Adoption events are held at three Fresno locations, Petco, Tractor Supply and soon at Pet Extreme in Fig Garden Village.  For more information go to www.elderpawsrescue.org
