Found On The Internet: Stolen Ring Comes Home

Posted:
MADERA, Calif. (KMPH) -

A ring stolen 13 years ago in Tennessee and found in Madera is on its way back to its owner.

Grover Christopher Collins has always wondered what happened to his high school football championship ring. It was stolen in Franklin, Tennessee back in 2001 or 2002. Then a couple of days ago it was found more than two thousand miles away in Madera.

"Immediately I was thinking to myself this is awesome," says Grover Christopher Collins, "I wanted to know how they found it, how they got to me, what was the story behind it."

Deputy Matthew Kutz from the Madera County Sheriff's Department tracked Collins down using the ring. On the side of the ring it says "BGA", so the deputy did a Google search to find out if anything popped up.

It turns out that "BGA" stands for "Battle Ground Academy," which is a school in Tennessee. Deputy Kutz then found a roster for the school's 1998 football team that lists "Chris Collins." When the deputy did an internet search for "Battle Ground Academy" and "Collins'" he found a LinkedIn profile. The deputy emailed Collins and asked him to describe the ring. Collins described it perfectly.

"I was floored," says Collins, "You don't expect something like that to happen and especially 13 years after you lost the ring. I'm holding the Madera County Sheriff's Department in pretty high regard these days."

Collins says he plans to put the ring on a shelf in his home. His high school football team actually won back to back championships, so the long lost ring is going next to his other ring.
