Eagle One Helicopter Parks Overnight On Sanger School Playground

SANGER, Calif. (KMPH) -

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office helicopter "Eagle One" had to make an emergency landing Wednesday night on the playground of Jackson Elementary School in Sanger.  The pilot and his partner smelled smoke in the cockpit and decided not to take a chance flying back to Fresno.

Thursday morning students couldn't believe their eyes when they saw the helicopter sitting on their campus.  While the helicopter was being checked out the crew welcomed individual classes for a short tour and questions and answers.

Fifth grader Mia Cruz had this reaction.  "I was amazed why would they land here instead of somewhere else?"

School Principal Debbie Santos said she was so thankful for the crew being so accommodating to her students.  Christian Torres wanted to know about the strength of the light they carry? Christian learned, "It is 50-million candle lights strong."

It was a fun Thursday for Jackson students learning how the helicopter assists the sheriff's office and people in all parts of Fresno County.

After being checked out by a mechanic the problem was determined to be only minor.  The crew flew Eagle One back to Fresno.
