Fresno's Fulton Mall Will Open To Cars, Council Votes

Posted: Updated:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

After more than 5 hours of public comments and debate, by a vote 5 to 2, Fresno city council members decided to go ahead with the plan to open Fulton Mall to traffic.

So that means council members will accept a $16-million dollar Federal Transportation grant.

Prior to the vote, dozens of residents voiced their opinions about which plan the council should decide on.

Mall supporters and opponents, wearing brightly colored T-shirts to signify which side they favored, packed the council chamber.

Some said restore the decaying pedestrian walkway.

Others said Mayor Ashley Swearengin is right to try open the six-block corridor to cars.

But in the end, cars will once again return to Fulton Mall.
