Hanford Boy Opens Surprise Gift; His Navy Dad

Posted:
HANFORD, Calif. (KMPH) -

A 4-year-old Hanford boy opened a large gift box, to be surprised by his Navy submariner father returning from a 6-month tour of duty.

Preston Putnam was told to open a large box in the driveway and got the surprise of a lifetime.

Rather than a bike or a toy car, Preston was greeted by the smiling face of his dad, Brad Putnam.

Putnam doesn't get to be home with his family very often.

As a Navy submariner, he spends majority of the year away while his wife and son are stationed in San Diego.

While her husband is gone, Jennifer Putnam has the tough job of being both mom and dad to their growing little boy.

Despite the hardships, she tries to give their son a normal life.

The Putnam's say they deal with the rough times by being creative and making the times they can be together extra memorable.

Brad Putnam does not know how long he will be home this time, but plans to take his little boy to Disneyland and Legoland during his stay.
