Deals While You Drive: Is It Safe To Get Ads On Your GPS?

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

There's a new way businesses are trying to get your attention while you're driving. However, it may not be safe.

Aimee Brittain is a deal diva. Her search for sales motivated her to start the website "PrettyFrugalDiva.com."

"Everybody that's around me knows that if we're going shopping together, you better get ready because I'm going to have coupons," says Aimee Brittain.

Brittain says she likes sharing her GPS location with advertisers. The quick click means coupons pop up on her phone when she's near a store offering savings.

"It lets me them know I'm going by, they know they want me as a customer," adds Brittain, "I think it's a great thing."

The "Pretty Frugal Diva" is interested in new location–based technology that delivers similar ads through the screen on the dashboard of a car.

"The car is the next frontier in terms of delivering content and advertising to consumers," says Alistair Goodman who works for a company the delivers ads while you drive. "In the case of this program, it's an audio ad that is actually triggered based on your location.  If you like the ad, you click the thumbs up and you get a reminder email sent with a coupon on your phone that you can then take into the store."

But deal or no deal, some people think that this is one more distraction that drivers just don't need.

"I certainly see it as a great model for walking around, having that offer on your cell phone, but I think for driving it creates too many distraction issues.  When you receive an ad, you need to sort of process that information, think about it, see if you want to take it, and then press a button to confirm it so there's a little bit more thinking involved," says Ron Montoya from Edmunds.com.

If you're worried about companies tracking where you're going and shopping, you don't have to receive the ads.

"We make very clear what data will be collected and we don't resell that data to any other parties," adds Goodman.

As for the "Pretty Frugal Diva", she's open to opting–in for savings.

"Saving money is how we can survive the bad times, so I'm always interested in seeing new ways of doing that," says Brittain.

We should get used to seeing more ads pop up in our cars. It's because app developers are working on more location based ads where a deal will show up when drive by the business.
