Man Shoots Girlfriend, Then Kills Himself Police Say

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

A Fresno woman remains in critical but stable condition in a hospital after police say her boyfriend shot her.

The shooting happened around 5:30 Wednesday night inside a room at The University Inn.

The hotel is along Shaw Avenue across the street from Fresno State.

Detectives are calling it an attempted murder suicide.

Officers say they forced themselves into the room and found a 55-year old Fresno man lying on the floor dead.

He was shot in the chest.

They also found a 40-year-old woman shot in the chest.

However, she was breathing and conscious.

Detectives say the woman told them, they were dating, got into an argument. Police say she adds he pulled out a gun, and shot her.

She claims he then took the gun, fired once and killed himself.

Detectives say, so far the evidence from inside the room supports her story.

Detectives add the woman did not call 9-1-1.

But dialed the front desk to tell the hotel clerk what happened.

Police say the woman only speaks Spanish, so she may have felt comfortable telling the Spanish-speaking hotel clerk first.

The woman was rushed to the hospital, underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.
