President Obama Headed To Fresno Talks About Drought

Posted: Updated:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

President Obama will make a stop in Fresno and Madera.

White House staff tells KMPH Fox 26 News, the President will arrive next Friday, Valentines Day, February 14 to tour our drought-stricken area. Some hope he will have good news and explain how the federal government plans to help California.

President of the Nisei Farmers League, Manuel Cunha says, "I think he's coming to see the first hand damage and the amount of damage. I think that is what the growers are wanting, that is what our irrigation districts, that is what our cities want, and our rural communities. They are all saying we have a real problem here."

The drought has been a key issue in the U.S. House.

Just this week, a water bill was passed that would limit water releases into the San Joaquin River to help the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.

Both valley representatives Devin Nunes and David Valadao say the house has been working on legislation to help Californians through this crisis.

Congressman Valadao says, "I am cautiously optimistic that President Obama now understands the seriousness of the situation in the Central Valley."

Growers like Cunha hope President Obama truly understand what the valley is facing and declare a disaster.

Cunha says, "That makes federal funds available to farmers to rural businesses to the communities to help us get by for the year. But also to help emphasize the importance on regulations that are out there that need to be changed, so we don't go through this again."

By the way, the only other time President Obama visited the area was in 2012. During that time, he traveled to the United Farm Workers headquarters in Kern County to dedicate the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument.
