Coarsegold Woman Gets Gift Of Lifetime, A New Kidney

COARSEGOLD, Calif. (KMPH) -

A woman in Coarsegold tonight is waiting anxiously for her Valentine's Day gift.

It isn't flower or chocolate; it's a brand new kidney.

Sheila Moreno was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Failure in November of 2010.

As many people might already know, finding a kidney donor is a very difficult thing.

It could take years; some people even die waiting for one.

"I was definitely scared of that, because people do die of this all the time, but I am not going to," said Moreno.

She says finding her donor, Eric Wynne, was a stroke of fate.

"My life would not be the same ... so yea … he saved my life," said Moreno.

Her second chance came one day when Moreno opened up about her condition to her hair stylist.

"She found out what was going on, and said well, I'll give you a kidney ... just like that," said Moreno.

Tina Wynne, who has known Moreno for years, says she didn't even think twice about it.

Unfortunately Wynne wasn't a match, but her husband Eric, was the perfect one.

It was a match so close, that two could be brother and sister.

"When I found out that we had the same blood type. I just started praying ... praying my butt off. I don't know if you are supposed to beg God, but I begged him to let me help. And he came back with a pretty strong yes," said Eric Wynne.

Now on Valentines Day, Moreno will get the gift of a lifetime.

"The gift of life," said Robert Moreno.

To say Thank you, the Moreno's organized a charity event in Eric's name.

"Our capacity of the hall was only 250 people ... we had about 500 people in there, and standing room only ... outside there was a line of 50 or 60 waiting to get in," said Robert Moreno.

The event was the hottest ticket in Coarsegold.

For a small fee, people came out for a night of dinner, auctions, and dancing.

They raised nearly $10,000; making it easier for Wynne to do what he calls his destiny.

"The bible tells us there is no greater love than to lay down your life for your friends. And I took that as an opportunity to live that out," said Eric Wynne.

The Moreno's say the act of kindness has now bonded the two families for life.

"I care about him ... I just want him to be okay. I just feel like I have a friend ... a new friend and relationship. He is just a great guy. To do this thing that he is going to do ... this act of generosity. It's beyond a thank you," said Robert Moreno.

The four will leave for San Francisco next week for the surgery.

They say the money will be used toward travel expenses and the cost of not working for several weeks.
