How Much Water is on Your Plate? Breaking Down Water in Food

The drought has many people changing their behavior when it comes to how much water they use.

Some are taking shorter showers.

Others are shutting off the water while they brush their teeth.

But what about eating habits?

A report by National Geographic may have you thinking twice about your dinner plate.

Its researchers found that the average diet takes 1,300 gallons of water a day to produce.

That's 474,500 gallons a year.

If you like beef, it takes about 1,800 gallons of water to produce one pound.

This includes irrigation for grains, plus water for drinking and processing.

If you prefer chicken, it takes 470 gallons of water for one pound.

When it comes to milk it takes 880 gallons of water to help produce one gallon.

Cheese? It takes about 600 gallons of water to produce one pound of cheese.

One slice of bread takes 11 gallons of water to produce. Most of that water is used to produce the wheat.

If fruit is your thing, there's plenty of water there, too.

One pound of oranges—or roughly two navel oranges—takes about 13 gallons of water.

Roughly 18 gallons of water are used to produce just one apple.

But what about apple juice?

It takes 60 gallons of water, to produce just one cup.

And, if all these numbers make you want to reach for a drink, know there's plenty of water in that, too.

One gallon of beer requires 68 gallons of water.

That breaks down to 20 gallons for one cup.
