"Highway to Help" Focuses on Raising Awareness and Research Funding
CLEVELAND and CHATTANOOGA, Tenn., Jan. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- A unique group of individuals from disparate backgrounds are joining forces to raise awareness and capital for Alzheimer research. The team is led by Byron Defoor, Grace Healthcare and Brian Johnson, AC/DC lead singer, among others. As part of the Fifty Plus Racing team, this group has come together to support the Highway to Help program. The campaign goal is to raise $1M for the Alzheimer's Association.
As a strategic partner to Grace Healthcare, COMS Interactive ("COMS"), has joined Grace and the team in fund raising efforts for the Alzheimer's Association through the 51st Annual Rolex 24 Race at Daytona International Speedway on January 25-26. The focus of the 24-hour event is to help defeat Alzheimer's, a non-stop, 24-hour a day challenge, through advanced media exposure and market leader participation.
Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the US, and more than 5 million Americans are living with the disease every day. It is the only cause of death among the top 10 in the US without a way to prevent it, cure it or even slow its progression. By 2025, the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer's Disease is estimated to reach 7.1 million, a 40% increase from the 5 million age 65 and older currently affected.
"Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of Dementia are significant health care issues, and the problem is growing exponentially each year," noted Byron Defoor, Racer and Owner of Grace Healthcare. "Alzheimer's is a major challenge in and of itself, but speaking from the perspective of managing Skilled residents, the disease further complicates the care process. We are hopeful that the Highway to Help campaign will educate and motivate others to contribute to the research efforts."
Recently, Grace Healthcare and COMS joined forces in a related endeavor against unnecessary hospital readmissions for the frail and the elderly in Skilled Nursing facilities. Further empowered by Daylight IQ™, the COMS disease management software solution, the Grace Healthcare team is providing an enhanced quality of care to those in their charge, including individuals afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of Dementia.
"The Grace Healthcare and COMS team recognizes the increasing criticality of Alzheimer's as a major component of the post-acute care environment," commented Edward J. Tromczynski, Chief Executive Officer, COMS Interactive. "Together, our organizations are planning ways to improve health care for this growing segment of the population, but look forward to the day when this affliction has been eradicated."
The Grace team provides care to those afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease in a safe environment, focused on the special needs of individuals with memory disorders. Residents enjoy appropriate activities and programs supervised by staff that has been trained in the care of those who are cognitively impaired.
