Madera Police Chief Issues Permits To Carry Concealed Weapons

MADERA, Calif. (KMPH) -

For years Sheriff John Anderson has offered Madera County residents the chance to carry a concealed weapon.   Recently Madera Police Chief Steve Frazier got the green light from city hall to do the same.   It wasn't a case of competition but instead convenience.

Chief Frazier has tried to spread the word on Facebook and at the front counter of the police station.  "I'm a conservative.   I think it's a fundamental right that we have to carry firearms and protect ourselves.   Historically there are cities that have mandated that every household have a gun."

Chief Frazier says those cities have seen a reduction in violent crime and the permit to carry a concealed weapon gets the credit.  He says it made a difference at a Madera pharmacy back in January when two gunmen entered the store and started shooting.  They had no idea the pharmacy owner was also packing.  "He had a firearm with him.   He returned fire.   He killed one of those individuals and shot the other one.   But the outcome would have been absolutely reversed if he hadn't taken those steps."

Chief Frazier wants to give other city residents the chance to carry a concealed weapon but so far only three people have taken out applications.

Houlding Precision Firearms in Madera holds monthly training classes to get a CCW permit.  Todd Houlding is President of the company.  "We're seeing class sizes of eight to ten people a month right now at our place and we're fairly small.   But that's split about 50–50 men and women."

Houlding says on average it takes a minimum of six months to get a permit thru the sheriff.  Since it's a first of its kind program with Madera's police chief chances are the wait time will be shorter.
