FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Three people are lucky to be alive, thanks to the quick work of Fresno firefighters.

A fire that started just after 8:00 a.m. Wednesday morning an apartment complex near Freeway 41, on Nevada Avenue near Orchard destroyed several units.

Firefighters saved the people, trapped on the second floor by helping them out through open windows

Resident Jessie Cha says, "My mind was just going crazy. I could not think straight the only thing I thought about was I need to get out."

The 18-year-old says once she smelled smoke, she ran to her front door.

However, it felt hot, so she left it closed and raced over to the window.

Reporter Erik Rosales asks, "When you saw the latter coming up and a fire fighter going up there, what were you thinking?"

Cha says, "I felt so lucky, I literally thought this would never happen to me but I've never been so thankful in my life to just have somebody tell me it's going to be okay."

Cha's apartment was saved. However, others did not fair as well.

Resident Ko Lee lost everything.

Ko admits the fire started in her apartment, she claims food was accidentally left on the stove.

Ko Lee says, "I was cooking rice on the stove and left it to take a shower and the fire flared up. I tried to put it out, but it burned my foot."

Fresno firefighters say the first truck arrived within 2 minutes, 15 seconds of the call.

Had it not, lives may have been lost.

All three people rescued are staying with family until they are able to get back into their apartment.

However, that may be a while. Damage is estimated around $75,000.
