Pope Francis - Time Magazine's Person of the Year 2013

Pope Francis is Time Magazine's Person of the Year for 2013.

He was elected pope on March 13th and quickly became "The People's Pope" because he prefers to pay his own bill at hotels, carry his own bags and get close the crowds who gather to see him.

This title of "Person of the Year" goes every year to the person chosen by Time editors as someone who has had the most impact on the world and the news — for better or worse — over the past year.

The last two popes to be named as Time Magazine's Person of the Year: Pope John XXIII in 1962 and Pope John Paul II in 1994.
