Crime Up With Early Prison Release. Are You Surprised?

What's more important? No jail overcrowding or less crime? A new study shows you can't have both.

A new study finds if criminals are released from prison to ease overcrowding, crime goes up. That's the finding throughout California since the realignment program that led to more jail inmates being released early.

Auto thefts are way up. Other property crimes also up.

The study was conducted by the "Public Policy Institute of California."

It shows a nearly 15 percent increase in car thefts in the first year after the jail release program started in October 2011.

That's about 24,000 additional car thefts each year.
