Madera Men Arrested, Accused of Firing at Deputy

Posted: Updated:

Two men are now in custody accused of firing as many as 40 shots at a Madera County Sheriff's Deputy.

24-year-old Abel Ramos and 28-year-old Mario Valdez were arrested Tuesday afternoon, at the Days Inn near Avenue 16 and Highway 99.

Deputies tried to pull over the two men in a truck at Fairmead Blvd and Avenue 22 near Chowchilla.

Instead, deputies say they drove away at a high rate of speed.

During the chase, shots were fired from the truck. The deputy was not hurt.

About five miles away, the truck veered into an orchard at Road 24 and Avenue 20 ½. The men ran away.

Inside the truck, deputies recovered stolen weapons, ammunition, sales receipts and camping gear that was stolen from a home in Coarsegold.

Deputies say they also found evidence the two may have been staying at an area hotel, which led them to the Days Inn.
