Glimmer Of Hope? GOP and President Meet On Day 10 Of Government Shutdown

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

It is day 10 ten of the government shutdown and one of the big worries is the country will default on federal debt payments. However, it looks like there may be a glimmer of hope with negotiations finally starting.

There was a meeting Thursday at the White House between House Republicans, President Barrack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. Some are saying that the meeting is offering hope that a short–term deal to raise the debt ceiling will soon be reached.

However, House Speaker John Boehner left the White House and returned to the Capitol without speaking to reporters. Majority Leader Eric Cantor described the meeting as positive.

"We had a very useful meeting. It was very clarifying I think for both sides as to where we are. The takeaway from the meeting was that our teams are going to be talking further tonight," says Representative Eric Cantor, (R-VA) Majority Leader.

Both Democrats and Republicans indicated that they are open to a temporary deal on the debt ceiling.

"What we want to offer the President today is the ability to move, temporary increase the debt ceiling, and an agreement to go to conference on the budget," says Representative John Boehner, (R-OH) House Speaker.

Republicans said their plan would raise the debt ceiling for six weeks until November 22nd. The White House responded positively.

"If they were to send them a clean debt ceiling extension, no partisan strings attached, he would sign it. We don't know that's what we're going to get here," says White House Press Secretary Jay Carney.

Senate Democrats also meet with the President for an hour and half. As they left the meeting they suggested they're inching closer to a deal with House Republicans.

"When they send us something, we'll look at it as clearly and as closely as we can," says Senator Harry Reid, (D-NV) Majority Leader.

As news of the meeting came out the stock market spiked. An agreement could help avoid what many economists describe as a nightmare scenario a U.S. default.
