Finally! Delayed Unemployment Checks Are In The Mail

Posted: Updated:

As many as 80,000 people who have been waiting weeks for their unemployment checks are finally getting good news.

California Labor Secretary Marty Morgentern has ordered the Employment Development Department to immediately begin distributing unemployment checks that were delayed because of a computer glitch.

As KMPH News reported earlier this month, the EDD installed a software upgrade over the Labor Day weekend, but problems have persisted.

Both Nevada and Massachusetts changed to the same computer system, and Massachusetts had similar problems for at least two months.

According to The Sacramento Bee, Morgentern issued a memo saying staff should not wait to verify whether people are eligible for the benefits before issuing the checks. Eligibility would have to be determined later, with any overpayments collected then.

An EDD spokeswoman told the newspaper people with claims in the backlog will begin receiving payments as soon as Thursday.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
