More Concerns For Valley Citrus Crop

Posted:
EXETER, Calif. (KMPH) -

There is more concern surrounding the Valley's Citrus crop after another Asian citrus psyllid was found south of Exeter.

The discovery was announced Tuesday morning and confirmed by the California Department of Agriculture.

The Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) carries a disease that has the potential to wipe out the citrus industry.

The ACP has already done major damage in some parts of Florida.

The state has tested every psyllid caught so far in California and none has tested positive for the disease.

As a result, additional portions of Tulare Kern Counties have been placed under quarantine.

The quarantine prohibits movement of nursery stock out of the quarantine area. It also requires commercial citrus fruit be cleaned of leaves and stems before it can be moved.

Residents in the quarantine area are also being asked to remove fruit from their backyard citrus trees.

Residents in the area who think they may have seen the pest are urged to call CDFA's Pest Hotline at 1-800-491-1899 or the Tulare County Agricultural Commissioner. Media inquiries related to technical questions about Asian citrus psyllid and huanglongbing disease are encouraged to contact Katie Rowland, Account Coordinator for Nuffer, Smith, Tucker Inc. at (661)817-3638.
