Shane Krogen Remembered As Motivator and Master Volunteer

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Shane Krogen inspired a community.  He was a volunteer who got others to follow.  His playground was the outdoors and tragically he died doing what he loved best.

Leaders from the U.S. Forest Service, State Fish and Wildlife and the Fresno County Sheriff's Office turned out Saturday morning at Woodward Park to celebrate Shane's life.

He died nine days ago when he fell out of a helicopter cleaning up a marijuana grow in the Sequoia National Forest.  Krogen was an outdoors man who led crews of volunteers thru the Sierra repairing trails and cleaning up pot grow sites.

Sheriff Margaret Mims said he embodied the term "volunteer".  "He had a wonderful giving volunteering spirit and because of him many people volunteered and he was a motivator, he was a leader and he was a leader and he just inspired people to want to help."

Shane's sister Lori Long was appreciative of all the words of praise offered for her brother. "I think it's really touching to me that so many people who he inspired who also have a love for California's natural resources were able to be here today."

In 2012 Shane Krogen received the U.S. Forest Service's Regional Forester's Volunteer of the Year Award.   In 2011 he won the Chief's Award.
