September 11th Victims with Valley Ties Remembered on 12th Anniversary of Attacks

Posted:

For some families in the Central Valley, the attacks of September 11th were more than just a time to sit in awe of the attacks as they were carried out on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

They lost loved ones—fathers, brothers, friends.

Fresno State Graduate Todd Beamer was on board United Airlines Flight 93 on the morning of September 11, 2001.

He lived in New Jersey, and was an Account Manager for Oracle.

His flight left Newark, New Jersey bound for San Francisco, when four men hijacked the plane.

Beamer and other passengers soon learned other attacks had taken place on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and that they were also part of the coordinated attack.

Terrorists planned to crash the airliner into the White House.

But the 32-year-old Beamer had other plans.

He issued the rallying cry, "Let's Roll," and with other passengers, overpowered the hijackers.

The plane crashed in an open field, 227 miles from Philadelphia.

Everyone on board was killed.

A park has been named in his honor in North Fresno.

Navy Lieutenant Commander Otis Vincent Tolbert worked in the Pentagon.

The Lemoore native was a Fresno State graduate, who also excelled in football. He was a standout Defensive End for the Bulldogs, from 1980 to 1983.

He later joined the U.S. Navy, and excelled there, too.

He eventually served under the Director of Naval Intelligence, in the Pentagon.

He was at work the morning of September 11th, when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into his office.

Tolbert would be one of 125 Pentagon personnel killed or unaccounted for in the attack.

Tolbert was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Shari, and the couple's three children- Amanda, Brittany and Anthony.

A flagpole on the North End of Bulldog Stadium waves old glory in his honor.

Timothy Ray Ward considered San Diego his hometown, but his father lives in Visalia.

The 38-year-old worked as a systems administrator, overseeing computers for the Rubio's Restaurant Chain.

He was on board United Airlines Flight 175, which departed Boston for Los Angeles on the morning of September 11, 2001.

He was headed home from a long weekend on the East Coast.

That flight crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

Ward was a Valentine's Day baby.
