Two 15-year-old girls have been charged with animal cruelty after a video surfaced showing them putting a cat in a microwave.

Police in South Portland, Maine investigated the crime after receiving tips from people in the community that saw the video posted on Twitter.

The video shows one of the girls place the kitten inside the microwave and turn it on, but police cannot confirm that the microwave was actually turned on.

The kitten did survive and is now at an animal shelter.
