Rim Fire Over 200,000 Acres - 32% Contained

Posted:

There is some encouraging news on the wildfire in and around Yosemite. Some evacuation orders were lifted overnight, and more will be lifted Friday afternoon. The 2-week-old rim fire is now 32% contained.

The wildfire has grown to nearly 202,000 acres and is burning along the northwestern edge of Yosemite National Park, but is not affecting major tourist points in the park.

The park reports some visitors have canceled reservations, but workers insist the sky is clear and there is not even the scent of smoke in the air.

If you are planning a trip to Yosemite over the Labor Day weekend, there are a couple of numbers that may be helpful. You can reach the Yosemite & Sierra Visitors Bureau at (559) 683-4636 and for road conditions in the park, call (209) 372-0200.

There is one road closure that could affect you, if you're planning to travel to the High Sierra around Yosemite. A stretch of Tioga Road, from Crane Flat to White Wolf is closed. This will allow firefighters to do their job. This stretch is expected to be closed through the holiday weekend, and includes access to Tamarack Flat and Yosemite Creek campgrounds.
