Caught On Camera: National Guard Air Tanker Battles Rim Fire

Posted: Updated:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

The so-called, 'Rim Wildfire' burning near Yosemite National Park has more than tripled in size overnight!

Fire fighters say erratic winds, steep terrain and an unstable air mass, all contributed to allowing the flames to spread.

Although the area in the Stanislaus National Forest is remote, flames are threatening about 2,500 homes, hotels and other buildings.

So far, the fire has scorched nearly 54,000 acres and is only two-percent contained.

Some 1,300 fire fighters are working on it.

One road is shutdown right now - Highway 120 - that is a major corridor to Yosemite National Park from the north.

Thanks to California Air National Guard Lieutenant Colonel Bryan Allen, and a camera, he is giving non-pilots a chance to see what he does, flying a C-130J tanker.

The Lieutenant Colonel's real job, flying to Hawaii for American Airlines.

Thirteen California National Guard aircraft and crews continue to fight wildfires across the state, and work closely with Cal Fire and the California Department of Emergency Services.

The C-130J tanker will continue its fight over the Rim Wildfire until it is contained.
