A Growing Problem In Squaw Valley Creates Safety Concerns

Posted:
SQUAW VALLEY, Calif. (KMPH) -

People who live in Squaw Valley say they have a growing problem with marijuana farmers and they say the county is doing nothing to help them. So, they called  KMPH to investigate.

"I really don't care if they smoke that stuff until their brain falls out, I really don't care," says a concerned neighbor in Squaw Valley.

However, they do care that they're growing it in their neighborhood and the group in Squaw Valley says they live in fear. They say they're so scared, they asked that we not identify them.

"There a big grow right next to us and we hear gunfire at night, sometimes at 3 o'clock in the morning," says another concerned neighbor.

The group says the growers are also draining water from the area. They say a muddy creek used to be full. They're also seeing more problems with smells and safety, because more pot farms one are setting up shop.

"Cockroaches, local cockroaches, they see this happening and they say we can do it too."

The group says they've written letters, called county supervisors and the sheriff's department.

"They come out with their helicopters, they take pictures and it looks impressive for a week, but I don't see them doing anything."

Neighbors say something needs to be done now or their way of life will change.

"I'm 81 years old," says a concerned neighbor, "I'm going to do what I can to preserve the water here and preserve our way of living up here."

KMPH spoke with Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims. She says the department knows about the marijuana farms and is trying to get rid of the growers. However, she says the process is slow, because the land owner has to be notified first. The land owner is given a chance to fix the problem and the department can only get involved if the land owner does nothing.
