CHOWCHILLA, Calif. (KMPH) -

A police standoff ended at a North Valley home where a man with a knife was holed up briefly.

The incident happened Wednesday in the 400 block of Colusa Avenue in Chowchilla, the Chowchilla Police Department said.

Officers responded to the home after receiving a call of a possible overdose. When officers arrived, they were met by a man armed with a knife, the police department said.

The man slipped back into his home and then refused to come out. The Madera County Regional SWAT team was called out to assist at taking the man safely into custody, the police department said.

Two children were removed safely from inside of the home. Several homes were also evacuated during the incident.

Lieutenant Riviere said, "It was an unfortunate situation that ended the best way possible," said a Chowchilla Police Department lieutenant.
