Caught on Camera: High Speed Crash in Visalia Neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
VISALIA, Calif. (KMPH) -

Police are now looking for the driver of a BMW that crashed a car at a high rate of speed into a Visalia neighborhood and then ran off.

The accident happened in Matt Loper's driveway.

"I've never seen anything like that in my life, that's stuff you see on TV not in your own neighborhood," Loper said.

The crash was captured on film.

In one part of the video, a person in dark clothing is seen running away before the dust settles.

"That car could've come through the side of my house, killed my family, could've killed my neighbor and his family.  It's scary stuff," Loper said.

Loper's truck was destroyed .

"2003 Chevy pickup got totaled, boat's got damage, there was fence, bushes that was right here that's all wiped out," Loper said.

Police say the crash happened around 6 a.m. Sunday. Then, five hours later, the BMW was reported stolen from a house a block away from the crash site.

Police say they talked to the registered owner of the BMW, who claims he was not driving during the crash.

But what's interesting is, police tell KMPH, the keys to the BMW were found in the car after the crash.

We asked police if they thought the owner of the BMW was lying about the car being stolen.

Police say at this point they don't have enough evidence to tie him to the crash.

While neighbors want the driver to be held accountable for his reckless behavior, they're counting their lucky stars.

"Grateful my kids weren't out here, grateful no on was killed. If it had been 8:00 am he'd have killed some people...there's people walking their dogs, kids out playing...he would've killed some people without a problem," said Loper.

If you have any information, you're asked to call Visalia police, at (559) 713-4216.
