Police Dog Attacked With Golf Club, Says Fresno Sheriff's Office

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

A Fresno man was arrested after assaulting his father with a golf club and repeatedly striking a police dog with it, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies say 23-year-old Thomas Martin struck his father with a golf during an argument and then fled on foot.

Deputies arrived at the intersection of Shields and Chestnut avenues shortly before 11:30 p.m. and immediately confronted Thomas. That's when deputies say Thomas turned and threatened a deputy with the golf club.

Deputies then deployed a police dog named Oka.

Thomas struck the dog several times in the face and muzzle area with the golf club, deputies said. But the dog managed to take Thomas down.

Thomas received minor injuries as a result of the attack. He was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel and then taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he was treated for dog bites.

Thomas was later booked in to the Fresno County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest and willful harm to a law enforcement canine.

The police dog was not injured, deputies said.
