Senate Votes On Immigration Reform Plan. Mims Says Time Is Right

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) -

The U.S. Senate Tuesday voted overwhelmingly to move forward with debate on a sweeping immigration reform plan.

President Obama gave a fresh push to the so–called "Gang of Eight" senators immigration reform plan, hoping to share in a political victory by the end of summer, and it seems to have worked.

Later in the day, the "Gang Of Eight" bill cleared that senate hurdle by a wide margin — 82 to 15.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims, who was invited to Washington to discuss the issue, says now is the time and the plan is the right one.

"And I'll tell you why. To be able to be here legally or get on the path to citizenship the person has to wait 13 years. They have to not have a criminal record. They have to have a background check and they have to pay a fine, get in line and then be able to speak English, and then once someone makes it through all of that I can't help but think they'd make a good citizen."

Mims says, Wednesday, she and other members of the group "Bibles, Badges and Business" will speak to other lawmakers to advocate for the bill.

Mims says the hope is to see it become law by July fourth.
