Large Marijuana Farm Found In Madera County Foothills

Posted:
MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

Madera County law enforcement officials on Thursday destroyed more than 12,000 marijuana plants discovered growing on private land used for cattle grazing.

It took agents from the Madera County Narcotic Enforcement Team, Madera County SWAT and Madera County Sheriff's Deputies 12 hours to destroy the plants, remove mounds of trash and drums of deadly chemicals from the Bailey Flats -- a former settlement about 10 miles northeast of Raymond, Calif.

Officials estimate the value of the grow is about $14,557,200.

John Anderson, Madera County's sheriff,  said the county is seeing a rise in the number of marijuana farms in the foothills as well as the National Forest.

No arrests were made, but the sheriff's office said the growers may have ties to a drug trafficking organization based in Mexico.

Anyone who sees any kind of suspicious activity, which includes a sudden increase in vehicle traffic, is urged to call either the Madera County Sheriff's Office at 559-675-7770, or the MADNET tip line at 559-675-7776.
