Posted:
MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

Public health officials say two dead crows found in Merced County last month tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The discovery is the first evidence that the virus is back in the Central Valley and will likely continue to be spread by mosquitoes to more birds and possibly people.

Health officials say now is a critical time for mosquito prevention.

Here are a few steps to protect yourself:

- Mosquito abatement experts say you should eliminate standing water around your home.

- Stay inside in the early morning and evening hours, when mosquitoes are most active.

- Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants outside.

- Use insect repellent that contains deet.

- And make sure you have screens on all your windows and doors.

Health officials ask if you spot any dead birds that you please contact the California Department of Public Health by calling 1-877-968-2473.
