Cyclists Beware! Thieves Target Bikes At Gyms

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Bicycle thefts are on the rise across Fresno and police say local businesses,, especially local gyms, are being targeted.

Police say gyms are a popular target because crooks can easily fit in by riding in on a cheap bike and swapping it out for a more expensive bike.

Clint Wells says he knows firsthand.

"I was at GB3 at Cedar and Ness and I don't know what I was thinking I decided to not lock it up and obviously it made it pretty easy for them," Wells said.

So, why did the thief target this shopping center? The surveillance cameras on the property are fake.

Fresno Police LT. Don Gross said, "Nowadays', video surveillance is very inexpensive and it's a very low-cost item compared to the security of your customer."

"Bike theft has always been a very, very high issue, said James Griffith, Manager of Tri-Sport Bicycles. "On average, I'm seeing four or five calls a week of a bike been stolen or someone getting serial numbers."

Griffith says websites likes Craigslist and eBay make it easy for crooks to unload stolen bikes, even in pieces.

Wells said that he checked on Craigslist to see if his stolen bike would turn up for sale. Although he did not find his bike on the classified advertisement website, he says it's still worth checking.

So, what can be done to reduce the chances of being ripped off?

Griffith recommends spending the extra money on a good U-lock, which unlike a cable, is harder to cut.

A U-lock, Griffith says, will cost around $35 compared to a cable lock which costs around $20. But the security, he says, is worth the $15 difference.

Griffith says because thieves usually sell stolen bikes in pieces, it's a good idea to engrave your driver's license number on not only the frame, but the handle bars, wheels, and even the gears.
