One person is dead after a car drifted into a Los Banos-area canal bank early Monday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
Officer say a 21-year-old driver lost control of an SUV headed west on Highway 152, just west of Box Car Road shortly before 7 a.m.
The SUV then drifted off of the road, colliding with a guardrail. The SUV continued forward until becoming air born over an irrigation and crashing into the west bank, the CHP said.
The crash sparked an engine fire.
A 35-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and a second passenger in the car sustained major injuries, the CHP said.
