Commemorating The Armenian Genocide

Posted:

More than a dozen Fresno churches and Armenian groups will come together this week for the 98th Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide.

The commemoration, which is held over a six-day period starting on April 23, will include a variety of activities to honor and remember those who perished in the genocide, as well as educate future generations on this atrocity and its impact on generations of Armenians who fled to survive.

Historians say that 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks around the time of World War I, which Armenians and several nations around the world recognize as the first genocide of the 20th century.

The former U.S. Ambassador to Armenia, John Marshall Evans, will return to Fresno to participate in the Armenian Genocide Commemoration events, since he first announced his personal conviction that the atrocities that took place during 1915-1921 were actually genocide, organizers of the event said.

Here are the three major events that will be taking place during the commemoration:

- Requiem Service at Ararat Cemetery, 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on April 23 at the Ararat Armenian Cemetery, 1925 W. Belmont Ave, Fresno, CA 93728

- 9th Annual Armenian Flag Raising Ceremony, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on April 24 at Fresno City Hall

- Church Services at the Pilgrim Armenian Congressional Church from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on April 24 at the Pilgrim Armenian Congregational Church, 3673 N. First Street
