100 Stray Dogs Will Soon Get New Homes

Posted: Updated:
MADERA, Calif. (KMPH) -

One by one, city animal control officers removed about 20 dogs from the backyard of a Madera home, a yard that one once housed more than 100 dogs.

With tears in eyes, Nicanor Santiago helped Madera Animal Control officers load up his dogs.

Weeks ago, Nicanor was trying to care for 100 dogs in his tiny backyard.

He says people would bring him dogs because they knew he would take care of them.

Some would promise to come back but they never did.

Nicanor who worked in the field for more than 30 years says he always had a soft spot for strays.

Nicanor says, "It's good, I'm glad that the city and other animal rescue groups are helping me find homes for these dogs."

His friend, Paula Bass said she would try to help him out the best she could.

Paula says, "I bring him meals for himself and go to Walmart to buy him dog food because he doesn't want to leave."

Madera Animal Control officer Jordan Lewis says, "We try and educate the public so things like this don't happen, and this is a great example of why you should spay or neuter your pets."

Out of the hundred or so dogs, thanks to animal rescue groups and others more than 50 found homes, and now that Madera County animal service took in 20 more. Nicanor is left with about 25, which officers say will be picked up in about a week or so.

Jordan Lewis says, "Love them and take care of them, that's great but this is just not a good situation for him and not for the animals."

If you would like to adopt one of the dogs, the Madera County Animal Shelter is located at 14269 Road 28, in Madera.

Shelter officials say Friday the shelter will be closed due to a furlough day.

But it will open from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday.

The city of Madera slapped Nicanor with a $22,000 fine, but the fine was dropped when city officials realized he was trying to find home for the dogs.
