An 83-year-old driver was killed in a wrong-way crash in Madera early Thursday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
The man was driving westbound in an eastbound lane on Highway 152 at a high rate of speed around 1:56 a.m., officers said.
A 25-year-old man who merged into the eastbound lane to avoid a car on the right shoulder collided head on with the 83-year-old driver, officers said.
The 83-year-old driver died at the scene.
Investigators say that alcohol and drug use do not appear to be a factor in the collision.
