Burglar Stopped by Alert Neighbor

Posted: Updated:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

A person who broke into a northwest Fresno home almost got away with a couple's jewelry and other valuables.

But an alert neighbor stepped in to stop the thief -- who almost got away with silver, pearls, gold jewelry and precious stones -- in his tracks.

Police say the burglar was spotted inside the Bushman family home around 12:30 p.m.

One of James Bushman's neighbors named Francisco spotted the thief.

Francisco rang the doorbell and then peeked inside the home and saw the thief run out the back door and jump over a fence.

Francisco then got in his car and followed the thief.

A few blocks away the thief ditched his car and ran off.

Despite police arriving within minutes, the thief got away. But he left behind his car.

Police say the car was full of stolen loot, possibly from several homes.

Officers say the thief even had a gold tester, which police say was used to make sure that the thief was taking real gold.

Sill, Bushman says he's thankful his neighbor got involved.

"That's what a good neighborhood watch program is all about looking after your neighbors and making sure your protected even your not home," Bushman said.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to call Crimestoppers at 559-498-STOP (7867).
