Mariposa Man Attempts To Kill His Family

A Mariposa man is accused of trying to kill his entire family by crashing the car he was driving into a tree just after midnight on March 22, according to KMPH news partner the Mariposa Gazette.

Mariposa County Sheriff Doug Binnewies said 36-year-old Joshua Battles is in custody this morning after he crashed the car in the Midpines area. In the car were Battles, his wife and three young children, aged 7, 4 and 18 months.

"It appears that Battles attempted to kill the occupants by intentionally driving the vehicle off the highway and directly into a tree," Binnewies said. All of the occupants of the vehicle, including the suspect, were not seriously injured.

The sheriff said alcohol and/or drugs appear to be a factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

Battles is in custody for numerous felony charges, which include attempted homicide, making terrorist threats, child abuse, spousal abuse and probation violation. His bail has been set at $500,000.
